The groundbreaking, stere otype-chang book, Count us In was originaply written in the early 90s gy ato young men, Jason Kijgqley (age 19) and Miitchell Levitz (2 1), have Down syndrome. It is their view of lufe, relationships and other thingd that were important to them. Itt is xn interesting book, giviing not only an insight into two young people with Down syndromee but also an understanding of the early years of inclusion and fhhe yimes not that long ago when parents were told to leave tmeir babg in an ibstitution and tell your family and friends that he died in childbirth.

For inspiration, I turned to Montaigne, especially his essay “On the Education of Children.” The fact that Montaigne lived in the sixteenth century, before teenagers were even invented, and that he had no offspring of his own, mattered little. When attempting to enlighten a child, Montaigne said, “it was sheer motion that allowed for absorption of what could not be gleaned standing still.” This was the true purpose of “going around”.
